Team Sleeps at airport
Monday, 20 September 2010 11:12
The Malawi National Chess Team failed to connect to Khanty-mansiysk after the organisers changed the flight time without proper notifications. In an email to the Chessam President, leader of delegation, Paul Nyirenda wrote "..Wish to inform you that we travelled well from Malawi to Dubai. We arrived in Dubai this morning (19th September 2010)at 3 am. However, we have been told that our flight to Russia has been rescheduled to tomorrow. As a result, we are forced to sleep at the airport in Dubai for a night due to the unexpected flight change. No accomodation has been made by the organisers as such we may sleep on the floor as we are also not allowed to get out of the airport due to VISA requirements. So far we have met several other players from different countries such as Zambia, Botswana, Nigeria etc. Will keep you updated." Chessam regrets this inconvenience and blames the organisers for the inconvenience. It must be noted that several federations had cautioned the organisers for the several changes that they had done within the past few days. notable to react first were the Royal Dutch Chess Federation as in an email that reads: On 15 Sep 2010, at 11:32, Jeroen Bosch wrote: > > To the Organizing Committee of the Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, > > Changing the charter times at such short notice is of course completely > unacceptable. > > The Dutch Chess Federation loses the connecting flight tickets in that case. > And I am sure that numerous other participating teams would lose their > connecting flight tickets as well. > > The Dutch Chess Federation demands that the charter times are changed back > to the schedule that was well publicized on the FIDE website and > communicated by the organisers as the final flight schedule. > > For our Munich flight this means: > LG 7525 19 Sep Munich 16.25 Khanty-Mansiysk 03.00 (20 Oct) > LG 7528 4 Oct Khanty-Mansiysk 04.35- Munich 05.10 (4 Oct) > > If you do not change back the flight schedule we demand full financial > compensation. > > We expect your reply confirming the change back to the charter times as > above within 24 hours. > > ROYAL DUTCH CHESS FEDERATION (KNSB) >

Mzuzu Chess improves
Sunday, 15 August 2010 19:47
There is a clear message that the number of players on the chess board is not only increasing but also expanding the area coverage in the Northern city of Mzuzu. At the Lab Enterprise qualifier held at Katoto Secondary School on 14th August 2010, players travelled from as far as Karonga and Chikangawa in Mzimba to participate in the MK500000 Lab Enterprises Tournament. Lab Enterprises, a local Malawian firm in Blantyre sponsors Chess in the Southern Region. The South has extended the kind gesture to the two other sister leagues of central and north. This is is probably the most organised tournament on a league level. The other sponsored tournaments include the Ilala Crest Lodge sponsored league in Mzuzu, The CIFU Group of Companies sponsored by the Msiska brothers. The others that have sponsored chess in Malawi include Anderson Engineering, Bumas International, Mkaka Civil Engineering Contractors, Nachi Traders, Standard Bank (Formerly Stanbic Bank), Chester fields and Mtima construction. The Chess Association is thankful to these organisations and look forward to more organizations coming to sponsor chess

ILALA CREST LIFTS NCL FINANCES
Sunday, 29 August 2010 18:34
Nothern Region Chess League got a timely comeback to sponsorship from its two year Sponsor Ilala Crest Lodge Ltd. The Mk50000 cheque was received by the President of Chess Association of Malawi, Hon Kezzie Msukwa, who doubles as member of the Malawi National Assembly for Chitipa East Constituency, on Tuesday 24th August 2010. Speaking during the presentation of the Cheque, the Managing Director of Ilala Crest Lodge Ltd, Mr. Arnold Shaba said that he was happy to come back to sponsor the league after some break, that was attributed to lack of committment by the NCL adminstration who had mismanaged the sponsorship money at one time. Shaba said that the amount presented should see the League through for this year and requested the committee to re-open dialogue towards the end of year so that the company can budget for Chess again. Shaba is hopeful that directors should be able to approve a further MK150000 or more for the 2011 year. He also stressed that he would be happy to see more chess played in Schools. Shaba, a chess player from secondary school days says he is happy that he is contributing to the nation through this sponsorship. Meanwhile, Linda Jambo is the Ladies Champion from the NCL. She is expected to lead the ladies national team to the 2010 Chess Olynpiad in Khanty- Mansiysk later in September this year. Msukwa, thanked the Sponsor and assured him that he would personally ensure that NCL uses the money for the purposes intended. Hon Msukwa bemoaned lack of sponsorship for Chess in central region where Mtima Civil Engineering Contractors were the latest to pull out after the League lost another sponsorship from CIFU group of companies. The Chess president asked other companies to emulate the gesture from Ilala Crest and Lab Enterprises in Blantyre who are the only two known sponsors at the moment.
